Visiting Africa for the first time was something I had looked forward to for as long as I could remember. With family in Moshi, Tanzania, we had the perfect place to stay, and the trip only got more exciting from there. When my parents first broke the news that we were going, I was already thrilled. Then, piece by piece, the plans kept unfolding—safaris in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, and even a separate excursion to Mount Kilimanjaro. Our time in Moshi was filled with vibrant local culture, natural beauty, and unforgettable experiences, setting the stage for even more remarkable adventures. As a photographer, this was a dream come true—endless landscapes, abundant wildlife of all kinds, and a rich blend of fascinating cultures, delicious food, and breathtaking views. Colorful Chaos: The Streets of Moshi in Motion
On our second day in Moshi, we were already immersed in the local lifestyle. Our family gave us a tour of the town, showing us the mix of serenity and bustling energy that defines this place. While some parts of Moshi offered peaceful moments with stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro, others were alive with vibrant street markets and lively traffic. Everywhere we looked, there were vibrant colors from fresh fruits and vegetables, people walking, cycling, or zipping by in tuk-tuks, cars, and motorbikes. What stood out most, though, were the smiles on everyone’s faces—no matter where we were. Even when we witnessed a minor car accident, there was no shouting or anger. A kind local calmly guided the car around the tuk-tuk, and just like that, everyone went back to their day, carrying on with the same peaceful energy that Moshi radiates.
A Delicate Perch
Stepping outside on one of our first mornings in Moshi, I had my camera in hand, ready to capture whatever nature had in store. The garden surrounding our stay was alive with sounds and movement, a perfect place to test out my Nikon Z6iii and 100-400mm lens. As I wandered, soaking in the crisp air and the scent of fresh greenery, I spotted a Speckled Mousebird resting delicately on a branch, framed by the lushest green leaves. Holding my breath, I steadied my camera and snapped one of my new favorite bird shots. Moments like these reminded me just how special it was to be in a place teeming with life at every turn.
Serenity by the Water
As we explored different corners of Moshi and beyond, our journey took us to the peaceful Nyumba ya Mungu Reservoir, about an hour and a half from town. The drive alone was an experience—towering mountains, rich green fields, and even a few hidden caves along the way. When we arrived, tranquility settled in almost instantly. We set up some chairs, sipped on cold drinks, and simply took in the moment. In front of us, goats grazed lazily on the lush grass, while the deep blue reservoir stretched beyond them. Along the shore, birds of all sizes filled the scene, from towering Grey Herons to the tiny, quick-footed Common Ringed Plover.
Materuni Falls: A Towering Gem
Materuni Falls wasn’t just a destination—it was an experience. The journey down was its own reward, weaving through lush coffee plantation hills, echoing with birdsong, and filled with stories from our guide. But the real moment of awe came when we reached the falls themselves. A sheer cascade of icy white water plummeted from above, cutting through a towering wall of deep green foliage. The scene was nothing short of breathtaking, with smooth, glistening rocks guiding the rushing stream forward. And to top it all off, I took the plunge—only to find the water was far colder than I ever expected.
The Final Step in Moshi’s Beauty
As I strolled outside, I spotted this young boy walking down a dirt path, his vibrant purple shirt standing out beautifully against the soft lavender petals scattered along the road. The greenery surrounding him created a perfect backdrop, making the image feel both peaceful and lively. What really stood out to me, though, was how this moment captured more than just a scene—it spoke to the essence of Moshi itself. The people, their culture, and the vibrant energy they bring all play an essential part in shaping the beauty of this city. It’s the final step that makes Moshi truly unforgettable.
