Washington in Focus

I moved to Washington in 2016, and that’s when my love for photography really kicked off. The state is like a photographer’s dream—there’s just so much to capture. From the moment I stepped into its wild landscapes, I was hooked. The hikes, the mountains, the lakes—I felt like I had discovered a whole new world to explore through my camera lens.

Washington also happens to be where I started Scouting, which added another layer to my connection with the outdoors. I began in Cub Scouts, and now I’m working my way through Boy Scouts with my eyes set on Eagle. Along the way, I’ve explored countless camps, paddled through its waters, hiked its trails, and embraced the challenges the outdoors has thrown my way. It’s been the perfect backdrop for everything I’ve learned about nature, adventure, and myself.

The Heart of the City

It was early July 2024, and the summer energy was alive on the streets of Seattle. The sound of crowds filled the air, with people moving through the Historic Pike Place Market District. I stood on the corner of Pike Place, just outside Aditi Chai, and looked up at the towering buildings a few streets over. There was a cool breeze, and the colorful flowers adorning the restaurant rooftops gave the area a lively yet serene atmosphere. As I snapped a photo with my Nikon Z6ii, I couldn’t help but notice how many others were doing the same, capturing the moments of their day in this iconic part of the city.

Lost in Thought on the Puget Sound

I watched my brother from the ferry railing as he stared out into the distance over the Puget Sound. He had his arms folded, gazing into the horizon as if deep in thought. I couldn’t help but wonder what was on his mind. Was it the mesmerizing blue waters or the distant coastline? Perhaps it was just the peace that comes from being on the water. His bright red cap contrasted against the deep blue of the Sound, making for a perfect shot as we made our way across the water, with the faint outline of the coast behind us.

A Taste of Seattle: Fresh Seafood at Its Best

A beautiful bowl of clam chowder arrived at our table, garnished with vibrant green herbs. We were at Anthony’s, a beloved seafood restaurant in Seattle known for its fresh and delicious chowder. The Seattle region, with its abundance of fresh seafood, has become synonymous with clam chowder. That day, our family was in town, and we were chatting away as we enjoyed our meal. From our seat, I had a clear view of the boats and water outside. As I took a shot of the chowder, I realized how much I had grown to appreciate food photography, finding beauty in the simple moments, like this bowl of warmth amidst great conversation.

Evening Calm: The Peaceful Side of Washington

As the sun dipped behind the trees on Lake Sammamish, the entire scene was bathed in a warm, golden glow. Two guys sat back-to-back on a paddleboard, fishing quietly in the middle of the lake. Paddleboarding is a beloved activity in Washington, and fishing is just as popular. The peaceful evening vibes—serene, calm, and warm—made the moment feel like it could last forever.

Iconic Views: The Majestic Puget Sound Meets Mount Rainier

The view of Mount Rainier from the Puget Sound is nothing short of awe-inspiring. From the middle of the Sound, you can see the Washington State Ferry cutting through the waters, creating a perfect stream behind it as it heads towards the horizon. The bright blue waters, with Mount Rainier in full glory, capture that “peak day” vibe you can only get on a perfect, clear day in Washington. The ferry, a staple mode of transport for both locals and tourists, reflects the spirit of the state—a beautiful mix of urban accessibility and natural wonder, all against the backdrop of one of Washington’s most iconic landmarks.

Washington truly has something to offer everyone, whether they’re locals or tourists. From the stunning lakes and oceans to the towering mountains and diverse wildlife, the state provides endless opportunities to hone my photography skills and capture its beauty. As I’ve explored different parts of Washington, I’ve realized that not everyone always has a set plan for their day. But in this state, the options are endless, and making that decision is often as simple as stepping outside. Whether it’s skiing just 40 minutes from downtown Seattle, hiking Mt. Rainier’s summer trails lined with wildflowers, or boating on the Puget Sound spotting whales and sea life in the fall, Washington makes sure you’ll always find something worth doing.
